San Diego’s Coronado Beach is ranked #2 in Dr. Beach’s 2011 list of the Best Beaches in America. It was the only beach in California to have been recognized in the top ten nationwide.
Dr. Steven Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach), is director of Florida International University’s laboratory for coastal research. His critique for Coronado Beach noted:
“Coronado Beach is the toast of Southern California; it is a veritable oasis by the sea, measuring hundreds of yards wide. With its lush subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship watching and the summer’s mild surf. The local landmark, Hotel del Coronado, was built over a hundred years ago, offering spectacular architecture and Old World elegance. Kings, sheiks, actors, and actresses have stayed at Hotel del Coronado, where food and drinks are served on the beach, and the hotel provides a great location for celebrities.”
We agree that Coronado Beach is a wonderful beach, and having it so close to a major population center like San Diego makes is a real jewel. But there are other great San Diego area beaches and even more up the coast. One thing for sure — California beaches are awesome! Even better, you can stay right on the beach at the Hotel del Coronado:
